Danche’s Sarma
Sarma (cabbage rolls) is a typical Balkan dish. Perfect for larger gatherings.
Ingredients
- 1 head cabbage
- 500g ground beef
- 1 cup raw rice, rinsed
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 1 garlic clove, finely chopped
- 1 carrot, chopped into small pieces
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 2 teaspoons ground red pepper
- 1 teaspoon basil
- 2 spoons oil
- water to cover
Instructions
- Boil the cabbage in a large pot until it slightly softens (about 4-5 mins).
- Pluck out all the cabbage leaves and place them in a large plate. Set 2-3 large leaves aside.
- In a frying pan, combine the beef, rice, onion, garlic, carrot and all the spices.
- Add oil and fry the mixture until the rice starts getting darker (about 2-3 mins).
- Put the 2-3 separated leaves on the bottom of the large pot.
- Put one large spoon of the mixture onto one leaf (adjust depending on size of the leaf) and wrap the leaf around the mixture.
- Layer the cabbage rolls in the pot, placing them seam-side down.
- Add enough water to cover all the rolls.
- Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer for about 2-3 hours, adding more water as necessary.
