Honey & Walnut Baklava

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 325°F.
  2. Mix chopped walnuts and cinnamon in a bowl; set aside.
  3. Trim the phyllo dough to fit your 9x13 inch baking pan. Keep dough covered with a damp towel to prevent drying.
  4. Butter the bottom and sides of the pan.
  5. Layer 10 sheets of phyllo into the pan, brushing each individual sheet with melted butter.
  6. Spread about 1/5 of the walnut mixture over the 10th layer.
  7. Add 5 more sheets of phyllo, brushing each with butter, followed by another layer of walnuts. Repeat this process until all walnuts are used.
  8. Top with the remaining 10 sheets of phyllo, brushing each with butter.
  9. Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamonds or squares all the way to the bottom of the pan.
  10. Bake for 50 minutes or until the baklava is golden brown and crisp.
  11. While baking, combine sugar, water, honey, lemon juice, and vanilla in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then simmer for 10 minutes. Let the syrup cool completely.
  12. Immediately after removing the baklava from the oven, pour the cooled syrup over the hot pastry.
  13. Let the baklava sit uncovered for at least 4 hours (or overnight) to allow the syrup to soak in before serving.
